I blame it all on advertising. My theory is that the advertisements we're constantly bombarded with are projecting an image of our lives being ever unfulfilled and incomplete without whatever snake oil it is they're trying to sell. So, because you don't use Laundry Detergent A, you're life sucks. Because you don't put your all organic vegetables1 in a Gucci handbag, your neighbour is better than you. Because you don't own a Toyota Crown X, you are stuck in traffic and sniffing the CO² being belched from vehicles all around you instead of driving 120kph on an open road in the middle of a city.

These subliminal messages take their toll …
